ParamaTalks with Sajida Bagwan - How Sports skills lead to Life Skills
Are all of us meant to be sports-persons?
No!
But do we need to bring a little bit of sport into each of our own lives?
Yes!
Apart from being a sense of nationalistic pride and collective highs that watching a sport gives us, pursuit of a game or sports is even more important for us as individuals. Sports teaches us many life's skills, as highlighted by Sajida Bagwan, past national basketball champion, coach, sports counsellor. Some of the key life lessons learnt from sports are:
1. Losing is not the end of the world
2. Always look ahead. Get set for the new game
3. Don’t carry issues from one game forward to the next
4. When you win, you should be humble
5. Respect the opponent
6. Discipline and timeliness are musts for getting better planned
7. Building stamina is important
8. Play is a big destressor!
The most critical of all of these is the ability to cope with failure.
To pick oneself up.
To overcome challenges.
To have a can-do attitude.
This extends to other all areas in life, especially academics, school or college, job, friends, personal relationships...
And its never too late to start! In college, at the workplace, or even post retirement!
