Learn to Read Labels: Talk by Geeta Prakash at Webinar organized by Moneylife Foundation

"The sum and substance of all cosmetic products is that the large print giveth and the small print taketh away,"

The importance of reading and understanding labels on your skincare products, especially leave-ons like moisturizers, serums, deodorants etc., cannot be emphasized enough. Chemical-laden products have been linked to short-term and long-term adverse effects on not just skin but overall health as well. And if you think commercially available chemical-based skincare products are easy on your pocket, think again. The long-term damage turns out to be far more expensive than the short-term benefits, if any. So, it is imperative that we become aware as consumers as to what we are feeding our skin with.

So, how do you make sense of the confusing fine-print on product labels and what are the alternatives?

A series of personal experiences and presentations at international medical conferences made me research skincare products and ingredients at length. This laid the foundation for the philosophy and the formulation of Parama Naturals products, a range of daily essentials for skincare and wellness. We ensure that the products are made only with
- High quality, most often food-grade, ingredients
- No added chemicals, no harmful ingredients, no fillers
- Adequate quantities of the good ingredients
Sincerest thanks to Ms. Sucheta Dalal and Moneylife Foundation for inviting me for a webinar where I had the opportunity to share these learnings on the 'whys' and 'hows' of deciphering skincare labels with a wider audience.
The talk raises serious and important questions about labels on skincare products like:
-What are the benefits we are looking for in a product?
-What are the good ingredients and are there enough of them to actually be effective?
-Are there likely to be short term benefits with long-term harmful effects?
-What is the life-time cost of the cosmetic products that almost everyone uses often right around the year?
-What are the main culprits we should look out for in the labels?
-What are the alternatives?
