Ginger Oil for Foot Massage

Ayurveda recommends Pada Abhyanga or Pada Ghata (Foot Oil Massage) as part of one’s Dinacharya (daily routine). This should ideally be done just before bed-time, and preferably, with sesame oil and ginger.

'Pada Abhyanga' has a multitude of benefits such as:

  • Relief from tiredness and fatigue
  • Reduced stiffness of foot joints and ligaments
  • Improved blood circulation, suppleness and strength of feet
  • Reduction in local oedema
  • Softening of dry, rough feet
  • Pacifying Vata especially during periods of less sleep, stress, excessive travel, hormonal changes, ageing etc.
  • Vision enhancement
  • Relief in sciatica
  • Aiding relaxed sleep

Usage

The traditional process is to soak feet in warm water for about 10 minutes, pat them dry and then massage with sesame oil. This is followed by application of ginger paste, which should be allowed to dry before washing it off.

However, this elaborate process can be quite discouraging, especially after a long and tiring day.
